It’s aptly stated that when the situation becomes challenging, the resilient choose to have a kip!
For some of us, it’s easy to fall asleep anywhere and in any position. However, most people need an ambient environment and a comfortable bed to fall asleep. In general, any sleep where the body is in discomfort and the mind isn’t entirely at peace will be a fitful one, and you may wake up feeling fatigued.
To prevent this, always try to sleep on a good-quality mattress. One such mattress that has gained attention of late for being both comfortable and supportive is the one by Purple. This is why we’ve written this Purple mattress review, to help you decide whether it’s worth the investment or not.
With this in mind, let’s dive right in and check out the many features of this mattress!
Update: March 2023
Exciting news! There is now an alternative to the purple mattress in Australia. It’s the Emma Zero Gravity. It’s the first mattress in Aus to have a similar pressure-relieving comfort layer, and oh, is it good!

Purple Mattress Review
What Is A Purple Mattress Made Of?
Technically speaking, the Purple mattress is a hybrid one because it has two entirely distinct types of material. It is made of hyper-elastic polymer and foam, providing unparalleled comfort to the person sleeping on it.
Secondly, the first layer of the mattress has memory foam that is four inches thick, which efficiently supports the rest of the layers and the person sleeping on the bed.
The middle layer has comfort poly foam that is about 3.5 inches thick. The benefit of this kind of foam is that it is way more airy and responsive than memory foam. In addition to that, it masquerades as a transitionary layer between the soft upper layer and the densely-packed lower layer.
Lastly, the cherry on the cake is the topmost layer of the mattress which has a thickness of 2 inches and is made of hyper-elastic polymer.
To ensure that the mattress is ultra-comfy, Purple sells a flexible and soft mattress cover called the “SoftFlex”. It can absorb significantly more moisture than a regular cotton cover or a Tencel one and is way roomier than them.
However, keep in mind that you can’t wash the cover in a machine and must take out any stains using a bleach-free detergent and some lukewarm water.
How Does It Feel To Sleep On A Purple Mattress?
Imagine lying down on a squishy, jelly-like bed with fluffy pillows surrounding you. Sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what the Purple hybrid mattress feels like!
The hyper-elastic polymer-made mattress cover makes lying on the mattress feel like floating on a cloud. Interestingly, the cover is stretched across the topmost layer of the bed in a grid-like design. It took us a while to get used to this feeling, but it was worth it when we did.
Furthermore, the mattress can integrate comfort with firmness, which isn’t something that all mattresses have managed to do. We say this because if you sleep on the side, the mattress feels comfy and helps relieve pressure. Yet, if one lies on their back, the mattress doesn’t sag and offers excellent back support.
The mattress is incredibly bouncy and doesn’t cause any resistance, unlike a regular memory foam mattress. We’d rate it as medium-firm, with it being around a 5 on a scale of 10.
Also, we recommend getting a sample of the material used in the mattress before you buy it. This way, you can be sure that the investment is solid and whether the mattress is to your liking or not. Purple claims that its mattress is ultra-flexible and can stretch 15x times more than it was initially, and if you get a sample, you can verify this.
Unique Features Of The Purple Mattress
1. Edge Support
This is a comparatively newer addition to the mattress and didn’t exist two years earlier. The function of the edge support is basically to make the edges of the bed more firm.
In addition to that, it reduces any chances of falling off the bed in case someone sleeps at the edges. The brand accomplished this characteristic by adding some dense foam to the edges of the bed!
2. Motion Isolation
If your sleeping partner tends to toss and turn a lot at night, sleeping for extended periods can get pretty annoying. However, with the hyper-elastic polymer mattress cover, you’ll be able to catch your forty winks due to its motion-absorbing properties.
3. Temperature
This is one of the hallmarks of the Purple mattress and what makes it stand out from the others. The unique grid-like design ensures that a lot of air goes inside and outside the tiny pockets of air in the mattress. These give it an edge over regular polyfoam, memory foam, or latex foam mattresses.
Despite not having any kind of advanced cooling features inside its layers, the Purple mattress remains airy and roomy thanks to the pockets of air it has.
Thickness And Weight Of The Mattress
The dimensions of a mattress play a key role in decision-making and often denote its effectiveness. In the case of the Purple mattress, here are the available sizes:
- Twin : 38 x 75 x 9.25 inches, weighing 31 kg
- Twin XL: 38 x 80 x 9.25 inches, weighing 31.75 kg
- Full : 54 x 76 x 9.25 inches, weighing 36.41 kg
- Queen : 60 x 80 x 9.25 inches, weighing 49.89 kg
- King : 76 x 80 x 9.25 inches, weighing 63.5 kg
- California King : 76 x 84 x 9.25 inches, weighing 63.5 kg
- Split King : 38 x 80 x 9.35 inches (2 pieces), weighing 63.5 kg
How Much Does It Cost?
The Purple mattress is priced rather steeply, so it’s probably not the best for you if you’re on a shoestring budget. Its massive popularity can be attributed to its over-the-top marketing and large-scale advertising.
In any case, here is how much the different variants of the Purple mattress cost in US dollars (depending on size):
- Twin: $599
- Twin XL: $89
- Full: $1,049
- Queen: $1,199
- King: $1,499
- California King: $1,499
- Split King: $1,698
Bonus Features
It can be tough to buy something like a mattress online because mattresses need to be comfortable, and what if the one you bought isn’t?
Given this, Purple offers a 100-day trial for the mattress, giving the customer enough time to adapt themselves to it. We recommend not making a call until one month of using the mattress because, like a new pair of shoes, a mattress also needs adjusting and adapting.
In any case, Purple mandates a 21-day break-in period for the mattress, before which they don’t accept any returns.
And the nifty packaging of the Purple mattress is another remarkable feature. It came neatly rolled up in a bag, making it easy to move from one place to the other.
In addition to that, the company offers free shipping and sends the mattress across neatly packed in a cardboard box. You need to take out the plastic wrapping, and voila, you have a new mattress!
Lastly, like most other mattress retailers, Purple offers a 10-year warranty.
Other Purple Mattresses
All in all, Purple offers two kinds of models. The Original Purple mattress has features similar to the Purple Hybrid, except it doesn’t have coils.
Apart from this, there are versions of the Purple Hybrid, too, such as the Purple Hybrid Premier, with differing thickness of the grid-like structure on the surface. It must also be noted that the Hybrid versions are better for people who weigh above 100 kg since they can offer more support.
Purple Mattress Alternatives
Though Purple is a trendy brand in the States, there are no plans to launch it in Australia. In any case, better local alternatives exist, some of which are discussed below:
1. Emma Comfort Mattress
The Emma Comfort mattress is available in many different sizes and is priced in the same range as the Purple Mattress. It features Airgocell foam and HRX foam, which helps support the body and ensure that you don’t wake up with an aching back.
Moreover, you get a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty, making it a great bargain.
2. Koala Mattress
The Koala mattress is priced slightly higher than the Purple one but offers greater functionality and is thus, worth the buy. You can make it medium-firm or firm as per your wish. Additionally, it comes with a 12-night trial period and a 10-year warranty.
3. Delta Sleep Mattress
Next up, we’ve got the Delta Sleep mattress. This is yet another superb alternative, priced the same as the Purple mattress, yet provides superior functionality due to its 3-layer foam base. It also offers a 120-night trial period and a 10-year warranty.
Final Thoughts
Before you buy a Purple mattress, the weight of the sleeper must be considered. Someone lightweight perceives a mattress very differently than someone who isn’t.
Also, the position one sleeps in influences the choice of mattress. People who like to sleep on their side usually go for softer options, and back-sleepers mostly pick firm ones. Since this is a medium-firm mattress, it’s ideal for both types of sleepers.
So, keep these factors in mind, and we’re sure you’ll select the ideal mattress for yourself!
